Frost & Sullivan: What's Next for Mobile Health?

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The mobile health (mHealth) market is playing an ever larger role in healthcare delivery and management.  With the saturation of mobile applications (apps) that support varied healthcare purposes, from smoking cessation tools and regional allergy alerts to instant heart rate readings, connected health is at the fingertips of end-users.

Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Zachary Bujnoch's moderation of the panel, "What's Next for mHealth?" at the 9th Annual Healthcare Unbound Conference & Exhibition on July 19 to 20, 2012 at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco, California promises to place a spotlight on the prospects and adversities mHealth industry players face in this up-and-coming market.  His moderation will draw from insight gained from Frost & Sullivan's research, Analysis of the U.S. Broadband mHealth Applications Market.

Wireless technology has a number of distinctive characteristics that make it an attractive platform for delivering healthcare anytime and anyplace. Wireless networks, ranging from body area to wide area networks, are increasingly ubiquitous. Devices with embedded wireless connectivity are used more often to manage personal health and wellbeing, giving rise to apps like chronic care management, fitness tracking, medication compliance, and diagnostic monitoring.  Already, the number of mHealth app purchases is in the tens of thousands each year.

"Today, we are seeing the tip of the iceberg in the U.S. mHealth market's potential," said Bujnoch.  "mHealth will continue on a steep growth curve as increasingly sophisticated mobile technologies and relationship-management tools disrupt the market."

Though a number of real barriers remain to be overcome, mHealth technology has great potential for encouraging healthy living. The "What's Next for mHealth?" panel will explore how people are benefiting from the new care practices and solutions enabled by wireless technology and device platforms. The panel will also discuss innovations in wireless health, emerging business models and trends, as well as key considerations in implementing these technologies to improve health outcomes.

"mHealth is an important theme at our Healthcare Unbound Conference, which also covers innovative applications of remote monitoring, home telehealth, eHealth, social media and gaming," said The Center for Business Innovation Managing Director Satish Kavirajan.  "These approaches help to manage diseases, promote wellness and facilitate accountable care."

In addition to Frost & Sullivan's participation in the "What's Next for mHealth?" panel, other panelists include Vice President of Product Strategy and Innovation of Macadamian Technologies Matt Hately; Assistant Medical Director and Chief Medical Information Officer of Kaiser Permanente, SCAL Region, John Mattison, MD; Co-Chairman of Health 2.0 and The Health Care Blog Founder Matthew Holt; Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer of WellDoc Chris Bergstrom; CEO of Rock Health Halle Tecco; and Managing Principal of Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions Nancy M. Green.

The partnership with the 9th Annual Healthcare Unbound Conference & Exhibition is within Frost & Sullivan's Connected Health program.

Castlight Health Takes Health Care Transparency Mobile With New Applications and Mobile Web Access

Castlight Health, developer of a personalized health care shopping platform, today announced the launch of Castlight Mobile, a new offering that extends the power of the Castlight Health platform to users’ preferred mobile devices. Available as a native application for Apple iOS and Google Android, Castlight Mobile provides users the flexibility to view health care cost and quality data at anytime and from anywhere. Offered by innovative companies to their employees, the Castlight Health platform transforms the way consumers shop for health care. The personalized, secure platform provides employees a wealth of data about the price of medical services, the quality of physicians and facilities, as well as important educational and convenience information. With Castlight, employers can maintain or improve the quality of employees’ care and lower total health care spend.

“Traditionally, transparency into the cost and quality of health care services has been largely unavailable to consumers. We are changing this paradigm by enabling companies to offer their employees easy access to the data they need to make better health care decisions,” said Ethan Prater, vice president of products at Castlight Health. “Castlight Mobile gives our users another access point to informative health care data, regardless of their location.”

“Many of our talented employees spend their time with customers on the salon floor, rather than in front of computers, so their smartphones often act as their primary computing devices,” said Allison Brown, director of employee services, Regis Corporation. “With new mobile options for accessing the Castlight platform, our employees will have easy access to cost and quality health care information wherever they are. We expect that in addition to helping our staff save money, this offering will also help them become more engaged in their health and wellness.”

Transparency into Health Care Cost and Quality, Direct from a User’s Preferred Mobile Device

The new mobile offerings deliver the key functionality of the Castlight Health platform in a secure, easy-to-use format that is tightly integrated to the Web-based portal to ensure a unified user experience. Regardless of their preferred mobile device, users can find care based on a doctor’s name, specialty or a condition; get on-the-go access to up-to-date health plan information; and keep critical health care information – such as specialists and family doctors – in one place.

“Today, when doctors recommend specialists, most people will take their word for it,” added Prater. “We’re all about ensuring that health care consumers are better informed – no matter where they are. With Castlight Health’s mobile offerings, users can become more informed about the care they’re receiving and paying for, before they go.”

Vignet, Inc., a Continua member company, was certified by Continua for its iPhone Mobile Manager, the first solution for Apple mobile devices that meets Continua standards for interoperability. The Vignet iPhone Mobile Manager is a Continua certified software manager that can be easily customized and adapted by various mobile applications and service providers. Continua Health Alliance offers a testing and certification program with a recognizable logo that signifies interoperability according to industry standards. Continua certification enables more efficient, standardized development and new market opportunities for interoperable products such as smartphones, dedicated wireless hubs, the Internet and personal health devices that can be used to collect and relay vital health information and education.

"With Continua certification, device manufacturers and solutions providers know that our Mobile Manager is going to link up," added Praduman Jain (PJ), CEO, Vignet. "Now Continua connected health solutions can be rapidly adapted to work on a variety of servers and devices, saving developers significant development time. We are pleased to support the use of mobile phones in providing readily available and convenient personal connected health solutions to improve patient self-management and wellness."

For healthcare delivery, a WAN is a telecommunication network used to transmit collected data securely to medical records storage locations, and between different LANs (local area network) and other types of networks, so that computers or devices in one location can communicate with services or storage in other locations, such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs) or Personal Health Records (PHRs).

Food 4 Thought - Mobile vendor with no refrigerator shutdown near Pharr

Kitchen cops in Hidalgo County ordered a mobile taco stand closed after it was discovered in operation without proper refrigeration for food. Taqueria El Pio off Jackson Road near Dicker, in the area South of Pharr, scored 31 demerits on a health inspection report. It was the dirtiest kitchen exposed this week on Food 4 Thought. An inspector told the Food Patrol that he was shocked to see workers using a small portable cooler in lieu of a refrigerator. The taqueria was deemed a public health risk because foods weren't maintained at proper temperature. The list of violations didn't end there. There were also no hairnets, no soap or paper towels for proper sanitation, no health permit on site and no certified food handlers on duty as required by the county, according to the report.
