Cardinal Health Highlights Independent Pharmacy Best Practices At Retail Business Conference 2012

ORLANDO, Fla., July 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual Retail Business Conference (RBC) for independent pharmacies, Cardinal Health this week introduced Independent Pharmacy Best Practices 2012, Ideas as Original As You Are, a special publication that showcases 16 unique programs, implemented by independent pharmacists from across the United States, that improve patient care and drive business results.

Cardinal Health provides pharmaceutical distribution and a vast array of business support services to nearly 7,000 independent pharmacies from across the United States. The company invited its independent pharmacy sales force to nominate successful best practices from their customers. Retail pharmacy experts from Cardinal Health then selected 16 stories to be highlighted in the inaugural issue of Independent Pharmacy Best Practices; and invited members of its National Retail Advisory Board, which is comprised of leading independent pharmacists from across the country, to select three finalists.

Live, at RBC 2012's Customer General Session, event attendees viewed videos highlighting the three finalists, and were invited to 'text to vote' for the most innovative best practice. The winner of the text-to-vote competition was Marty Bigner of Thrift Drugs, McComb, Miss. Cardinal Health will donate $10,000 to the organization of Bigner's choice, in his honor.

The three independent pharmacies that were recognized as finalists at Cardinal Health's Best Practices Text-to-Vote competition at RBC 2012 are:

Free Vitamin ClubMarty Bigner of Thrift Drugs, McComb, Miss. –Thrift Drugs implemented a Free Vitamin Club for children, with the goal of improving patient health, demonstrating its commitment to the community and building new – and stronger – relationships with patients. Marty Bigner, owner of Thrift Drugs, orders children's chewable vitamins with a Thrift Drugs private label, at a cost of less than 90 cents each. He invites members of his community to sign up children, ages 2-12, to participate in the Free Vitamin Club, and promotes the program through local radio and print ads, his storefront signs, flyers and at local health fairs. In the program's first year, nearly 290 children were enrolled in the program, representing more than 100 families – half of which had not visited Thrift Drugs before. Bigner views the program as a great, low-cost way to develop patient relationships and patient loyalty.Synchronizing Refills: Meds Made Easy – Mark Hobbs & Jessica Beal of Hobbs Pharmacy, Merritt Island, Fla. – Hobbs Pharmacy services a large number of 'high prescription volume' patients – who take 15-20 different prescription medications. These patients needed to call or visit Hobbs Pharmacy almost daily – which was time consuming for patients and pharmacy staff alike. To address this issue, Hobbs Pharmacy implemented a synchronized refill program in 2011. Pharmacy staff synchronize each patient's prescriptions and their corresponding refill timelines; and then work with prescribing physicians to get all medications on a synchronized refill schedule, so patients only need to visit the pharmacy once or twice per month.

This Meds Made Easy program enables Hobbs Pharmacy to better identify adherence issues and to improve its collaboration with doctors.  Hobbs Pharmacy now receives fewer patient phone calls, makes fewer patient deliveries and has a much more predictable inventory. The program has freed up staff time to focus on other patient care initiatives, and has generated at least 25 new patients, each of whom utilize 12-15 prescriptions per month. Jessica Beal, pharmacist at Hobbs Pharmacy, says that the program is particularly appreciated by the 'sandwich generation,' comprised of middle-aged adults who serve as caretakers for their parents and their children. This program helps these customers manage their parents' medications much more time efficiently.

Teacher Immunization ProgramKevin Reddish, of Reddish Pharmacy, Nampa, Idaho –  After Kevin Reddish, owner of Reddish Pharmacy in Nampa, Idaho, became certified at RBC 2012 to offer immunizations, he started marketing his new flu vaccine services to local senior centers. But these new services really took off when Reddish worked with the leaders of his local school system to begin offering teacher flu clinics at local schools. In just the first month and a half, Reddish had booked 25 flu vaccine clinics at local schools, and in just the first year of the program, he increased his vaccine business from 200 to more than 850 immunizations. Reddish also leveraged the Teacher Immunization Program to earn teachers' prescription business. He encouraged teachers to sign up for his auto-refill program, and offered to deliver teachers' prescriptions directly to them at school, at no additional fee. His auto-refill program now has 250 patients enrolled; many of whom are teachers. Reddish now plans to market his other pharmacy services to teachers at future flu clinics, and plans to expand the Teacher Immunization Program to smaller outlying schools. Reddish says this program is a great example of a way pharmacists can improve community health while building their business.

"We work every day with forward-thinking pharmacists who are constantly finding new ways to build stronger, more resilient businesses and improve the quality of care they deliver to patients," said Steve Lawrence, senior vice president of Independent Sales for Cardinal Health. "We're thrilled to share some of these best practices at RBC 2012, and we congratulate this year's honorees and finalists for their commitment to community pharmacy excellence."

Hard copies of Independent Pharmacy Best Practices 2012, Ideas as Original As You Are were made available to all attendees of RBC 2012. Following the event, Cardinal Health customers can access an electronic version of the publication via the company's secure customer portal. Electronic versions of the publication are also available on Cardinal Health's public web site.

Cardinal Health, Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health System Announce Unique Collaboration To Promote Urban Renewal

DETROIT, May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Cardinal Health, Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) today announced a unique collaborative effort to spur urban renewal and bring jobs to the city of Detroit.

(Photo:  http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120529/CL15141 )

As part of the economic recovery effort, DMC and HFHS have agreed to long-term distribution agreements with Cardinal Health, enabling the company to relocate a medical products distribution center to the midtown area from its current Romulus locations. The transfer will bring 140 jobs to the city of Detroit.

"DMC was focused on leveraging our partnership in a meaningful way to contribute to the city's revitalization. This new facility will fulfill Cardinal Health's commitment to relocate its Michigan based distribution operations within the City of Detroit, which was part of the negotiation of the DMC agreement. We are excited our 20 year partnership will continue and the relocation will be an opportunity for new construction within the midtown area," said Donald P. Groth, corporate vice president, Materials Resource Management, Detroit Medical Center.

"Henry Ford Health System is deeply committed to the revitalization of the midtown area and is pleased to be collaborating on what we envision as the first step in a major redevelopment effort," said Nancy Schlichting, HFHS CEO. "We're thrilled to be making progress and expect that this project will lead to further development not only in the areas of warehousing and office space but also in retail and residential space."

Cardinal Health has construction plans for a 273,520 square foot distribution center. The company has filed an application with the Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority and is awaiting a number of City Council approvals before details can be finalized. The company advises that its relocation to the site within city limits is dependent upon those approvals and a robust package of local, state and federal economic development incentives.

Pending approvals, Cardinal Health could begin construction by the end of 2012. Construction would be complete in approximately 12 months.

"We're pleased that we have entered new, long-term agreements with both Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System and that, as a result of our mutual long-term commitments, we're able to collaborate with these organizations in support of their commitment to the city of Detroit and its revitalization," said Steve Inacker, president, Medical Channel Management at Cardinal Health.

Cardinal Health will also serve surrounding areas in the state of Michigan as well as northern Ohio and northern Indiana from its new location.

Cardinal Health ends DEA inquiry with settlement

NEW YORK (AP) — Pharmaceutical wholesaler Cardinal Health Inc. said Tuesday one of its Florida facilities will be barred from shipping controlled substances for two years under a settlement with federal authorities over alleged ineffective controls.

The Lakeland, Fla., facility will remain open and other operations will continue under the agreement with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Cardinal Health also intends to improve procedures that are designed to prevent prescription drugs from being abused.

The Dublin, Ohio, company said the DEA is not planning to take further actions against other Cardinal Health facilities.

The DEA said the Cardinal Health distribution center and two Orlando-area CVS Caremark Corp. pharmacies were distributing amounts of the oxycodone that were far in excess of legitimate medical needs. Oxycodone is a powerful painkiller and the active ingredient in drugs like Percocet and OxyContin.

The DEA ordered the facilities shut down in February. Cardinal Health went to court to stop the move, but in March a federal appeals court allowed the DEA's suspension to proceed.

The agency cited the same Cardinal Health facility for failing to prevent illegal distribution of pharmaceuticals in 2008. The company paid $34 million to resolve claims that it did not tell the DEA about suspicious orders for hydrocodone, the main ingredient in painkillers like Vicodin.

CVS Caremark, based in Woonsocket, R.I., said it has cut back "dramatically" on the amount of oxycodone prescribed by the two pharmacies cited by the DEA.

Shares of Cardinal Health lost 52 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $42.24 in afternoon trading. CVS Caremark shares rose 27 cents to $45.38.

Cardinal Health Drug Shipments in Florida Blocked by Court

Cardinal Health Inc. (CAH) must stop distributing controlled substances from its Lakeland, Florida, center as an appeals court weighs the legality of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration order blocking the shipments.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington today rejected Cardinal Health’s request to put on hold a lower court’s Feb. 29 decision upholding the DEA suspension.

Cardinal Health “has not satisfied the stringent requirements for an injunction pending court review,” the three judge panel ruled.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton on Feb. 29 said that the government sufficiently proved that the distribution facility posed a public safety threat by shipping heavy volumes of the prescription painkiller oxycodone to pharmacies, including two owned by a unit of CVS Caremark Corp. (CVS)

Debbie Mitchell, a Cardinal Health spokeswoman, didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail message seeking comment on the ruling.

Walton, on March 14, ordered two CVS stores in Sanford, Florida, to stop filling prescriptions of controlled substances during the DEA investigation. He said the DEA produced enough information to show that pharmacists at the stores filled prescriptions for the painkiller oxycodone that they knew or should have known would lead to the drug being diverted for illegal uses.

CVS appealed that ruling and Walton’s order was temporarily placed on hold.

The three judges in today’s ruling on Cardinal Health -- U.S. Circuit Judges Karen LeCraft Henderson, David Tatel and Janice Rogers Brown -- are the same ones considering the CVS appeal.

The DEA suspended the licenses of the pharmacies and a Florida distribution facility owned by Cardinal Health Inc. on Feb. 2 after determining that continued operations posed an imminent danger to the public, according to court filings.

The cases are Cardinal Health v. U.S. Department of Justice, 12-05061, and Holiday CVS LLC v. Holder, 12-05072, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit (Washington).
