For household kats, the holidays are not very hectic. Oh sure, there's extra hours we felines must devote to ribbon play and box investigation but, all in all, our regular routines are hardly interrupted. For our humans however, the holidays are a very busy time, sometimes to the point of overwhelming. The seasonal chaotic hustle paired with a not-enough-hours-in-the-day attitude can lead to anxiety, sleep deprivation, and weight gain. My humans have been running in all directions like a "you know what" with it's head cut off and there's no end in sight until the jolly, little elf himself climbs down our chimney. To help, I learned that 5-HTP (or hydroxytryptophan) is just what my over-extended folks need to help keep the holiday season merry and bright.
5-HTP (also known as hydroxytryptophan) is a dietary supplement derived from the seeds of a plant named giffonia simplicifolia (you pronounce it, I can't).
Hydroxytryptophan is an amino acid that is formed as tryptophan plays its role in serotonin production. Serotonin, as many of you know well, is a neurotransmitter (you know what neurotransmitter's do, they deliver communication between human brain cells) that supports mood regulation, calm, healthy sleep patterns, and appetite control.
5-HTP, supplementation therefore, can help maintain healthy levels of serotonin in the brain. This is very helpful to when winter sun is limited and one needs to maintain a calm state of mind when the dog tips over the Christmas tree for the third time (I tried to tell my small humans not to wrap that bone and hide it behind the tree!).
5-HTP also helps humans with healthy sleep patterns (this something I've never worried about). Serotonin production is key to restful and continued sleep. Because 5-HTP helps maintain healthy serotonin levels, it allows people to get to sleep more easily and stay asleep longer.
The holidays, according to my tall, female human, can be a little confronting when she steps on the bathroom scale (so many cookies -- and none of them ever tuna flavored, by the way)! Studies at the University of Maryland indicate that supplementation of 5-HTP can offer some assistance in this area as well by supporting a balanced appetite. Excellent news for my favorite female human who very much wants to wear that special dress on New Year's Eve.
And, good news for everyone who would like to enjoy the benefits of improved health throughout the coming new year.
